Much slower speeds downstream of HomeHub

Go to solution

I've just moved to BT Total Broadband 2 using a HomeHub (3). It's the speed reports that puzzle me.

Between exchange and HomeHub, BT reports 8.63Mbps, between HomeHub and computer it's 4.23 Mbps, via WiFi. (I live in a city centre location in an apartment complex where the wiring is communal.)

At the time there were no other devices using the service that I am aware of. I had cycled the power to the HomeHub prior to the test.

Can anyone suggest what could be causing the loss? Or how I can find out?

Probably the WiFi, try the BT Speedtest using an Ethernet cable.

I certainly get a better speed using Ethernet but I don't understand why the WiFi speed should be so much lower. The HomeHub and the computer are within 1.5m of each other and in clear sight.

Thanks for this. There are certainly ideas here I hadn't thought of. So I'll try one or two that seem most relevant.
(And mark this as 'accepted solution')

Update on previous positive posting.

It is looking increasingly the case that the problem lay with the security choices.

I have now rationalised on WPA2 on all devices, including the HomeHub, and speeds are looking more rational and (hopefully) more reliable.

The instructions were clear to follow. Well done someone!
