Ports 22&23 blocked

I have 1Gb BT fast broadband. Everything is OK but it looks like ports 22&23 are blocked by BT. Called BT helpline and after being switched from one advisor/specialist to another, I have been informed that it is for the sake of my own safety. In other words BT wants me to go thorough their servers only. At the first glance it makes sense. But only at the first glance... I've red some old topics regarding this issue and it seems to be solved(?). But not for me, no. Any ideas anyone? Any help will be much appreciated.

I’m pretty sure BT don’t block any ports.

I’ve not tested port 23 but can definitely connect using SSH both in and out on port 22, so it’s definitely not blocked.

I’m using my own router if it makes a difference
