Problem with Automatic IP Address and Wireless Extender

Go to solution

I wonder if anyone can help with a problem that has baffled me and a local computer "expert" who has tried to sort out without success.  No success either through BT helpline.  We have BT Infinity connecting to a Home hub 3a (Version 4.7.5.1.83.8.94.1.11 (Type A)).  To this we have a TP-Link Range Extender TL-WA850RE to provide wireless coverage through the house.  There is a strong wireless signal for the connection.  Off the range extender we take a network cable to a Netgear Ethernet switch from which are connected 2 desk tops and an external hard drive (WD My World Book).

The two desktops will only connect to internet if we disable automatic IP and DNS.  As soon as I set a static IP address it they connect fine for a day or so then stop connecting.  Not always both desktops however!  The one running Windows 8 seems more problematic than the one still on Windows 7 but there have been occasions when both loose connection.  If I switch to automatic and then reenter the static connection then it reconnects.  With this arrangement I can't get the hard disk to connect at all on either desktop.

Prior to installing the wireless extender we used mains connectors. the arrangement was better in that it would connect and the hard disk was accessible but desperately slow and the wireless coverage wasn't good enough hence the change.

Connecting by wireless, there is a strong signal and network is found although need to set static address otherwise won't connect.

Overall connection on to infinity seems reasonable although we do get breaks in TV signal when watching streamed films and HD channels are too unreliable to make worth watching.

Thanks for help in advance.

Sounds like the PCs are being given the wrong settings by DHCP. Is the TL-WA850RE wrongly running a DHCP server?

How would I tell if the TL-WA850 is wrongly configured?  When I type http://tplinkextender.net to access the TP-LINK configuration software I get a time out message:

The connection has timed out

The server at tplinkextender.net is taking too long to respond.

With the PC using the automatic settings, go to a command prompt and issue the command: ipconfig /all

What settings are reported for the adapter called Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection ?

BT Home Hub has DHCP as enabled.  Is that correct?

I was expecting to see more details including IP address, Default gateway and DNS servers to be honest. Which OS is this from?
