Replacing smart hub but what modem?

Hi. I want to use a Netgear XR500 on my BT internet but I’ve read you can’t just use the smart hub as a modem.  What would be the best choice for a good modem???  I’ve read a bit about the huawei hg612 and unlocking it?  But what is the unlocking bit and would I need too??
thanks for any help.

Re: Replacing smart hub but what modem?

The HG612 is the modem that BT used prior to the advent of all in one VDSLModem/routers such as the Homehub 5 and Smarthubs.

It has proved to be a good reliable modem and is relatively cheap on eBay.

It is plug and play and you only need to "unlock" it if you want to access the connection stats. It is very easy to unlock if that is what you want or you can buy them already unlocked. The sellers usually charge more because it is unlocked but as I said it is very easy to do your self.

Thanks.  Does having it unlocked increase the speed or anything?

Re: Replacing smart hub but what modem?

No, it just gives access to the line stats and configuration settings.
