Slow ethernety

Here’s a weird one. So plugged the PS5 directly into the Ethernet which goes into the summerhouse (usually it’s plugged into a switch along with a BT disc) and I get 95mbps. But the BT WiFi disc is plugged into the switch so the summerhouse has good WiFi.
I then switched back to WiFi on the PS5 and now I get 480mbps connected to the disc. Wtf?!?!
So the same Ethernet going into the network switch which feeds the BT disc gives me a faster speed to the PS5 via WiFi than the PS5 being directly plugged into Ethernet. Makes no sense.

Re: Slow ethernety

Is the port on the PS5 gigabit capable or just 100Mb/s?  Even if it is gigabit, it's not unusual for the auto-negotiation to screw up occasionally and decide it can only do 100Mb/s.  Try a different cable, (or at least clean the plugs).

Re: Slow ethernety

I suspect you're using a Cat5 ethernet cable between your hub and PS5. These cables only support a maximum of 100Mbps - is the cable you're using black with yellow ends, like the one that comes in the box with your hub? If so, that's the problem.

Go on Amazon and search for a Cat5e ethernet cable. They support up to 1000Mbps which will supply the full speed to your PS5. Just be aware that using network switches can inherently limit the speed each device can get if the switch itself doesn't support gigabit.

Basically, run a Cat5e cable directly between your hub and PS5 and you'll be good to go.

Re: Slow ethernety

You make a good point, the old cat 5 was 100Mb/s only, but the black cable supplied with the hub is 5e.  At least, mine are.

Re: Slow ethernet to ps5

Greetings. It’s a Cat6a direct from the router and the switch is gigabit too.
it’s just weird how the same Ethernet from the hub going into the switch, then from the switch to the BT WiFi disc is getting 480mbps WiFi to the ps5, but that same Ethernet from the hub (direct without the switch)  straight into the ps5 gets me nothing really.
I must be missing some setting somewhere. In fact on the second try I got 28mbps wired connection.  The ps5 supports 1000mbps.

Re: Slow ethernet to ps5

Refer to my first post.  You need all 8 wires connected for gigabit.  A bit of crude on one of the pins and it drops to 100Mb.

If you have something else with a 100Mb interface connected to the switch that can confuse the auto-negotiation but the good connection to the wi-fi seems to rule that out.

Re: Slow ethernet to ps5

I’ll try the wife’s new laptop this weekend and see what happens.
