Smart Hub 2 - Firmware glitch and sneaky networks

Go to solution

I have recently had FTTP installed and generally very pleased with it. However, since I do not want BT-WiFi being transmitted I disabled it using MyBT. During deactivation I noticed three issues:

  1. The Technical Log in Advance settings shows BT WiFi Activated when actually it is deactivated as shown in hub Status page.
  2. There are 2 Hidden Networks, one for 2.4G and the other for 5G. When the hub has WiFi activated it is transmitting 8 channels !, four for each band. See below.
  3. In the Technical Log in Advance settings it shows Data Rate 1000Mbps/ 1000Mbps (my actual rate is 71Mbps/ 21Mbs.

Here are some screen shots regarding the sneaky channels:

Sneaky channels with BT WiFi activated (ones with no SSID):

Sneaky channels with BT WiFi deactivated (ones with no SSID):

I have also proved that these sneaky channels are coming from my hub by bringing the laptop closer to the hub and see the signal increase.

The data rate is the rate being received by your WAN port which is a GbE port connected to the ONT. You cannot see the line rate with FTTP as that is the rate received by the ONT not your hub.

It can take up to 28 days for BTwifi to be disabled, it is not immediate as it is not just a question of turning off your signal but also disallowing you to connect elsewhere.

@licquorice  Thanks for explaining the data rate issue.

You misunderstood my BT WiFi issue.  I have been able to deactivate BT WiFi (BT Fon and X) after 24 hours so no problems there. The issue is the Hidden Networks coming from my hub. These are the ones without SSID in my screenshots and they are transmitting regardless whether BT WiFi is Activated or Deactivated. In fact not mentioned in my original post, if I switch off WiFi altogether they are still transmitting. Questions ares, why is the hub transmitting these and why is the Technical Log showing BT WiFi Activated when it is not.

Hmm, I wonder if they are backhaul wifi channels for the disc system.

Yes I thought that, do you think the Hub Team can explain this mystery to us?

regarding the Technical Log showing BT WiFi as Activated I think is a definite glitch in the firmware.

Yes, I think that one has been reported before.

Using a wifi analyser app, I can also see signals with no SSID from my SH2.

Perhaps either @Dan-O  or @BrunoN  can enlighten us.

Hi,

Yes there are hidden access points/BSSIDs that are used as the backbone connection for discs - the white retail Whole Home Wi-Fi solution works in the same way. This is a separate, secured network for discs to connect and communicate.
