Split ethernet

Hi there!  I have 4 ethernet ports on the back of my router but need a 5th. Can I simply add a device to input two devices to one port?  I bought a splitter but it didn’t work.

You just need a Ethernet switch connected to one LAN port on the home hub. You will then have four extra ports.

Like the  TP-Link TL-SG105S

You need a 5 port ethernet switch like a TP-Link TL-SG105.

Many thanks!  I don’t have the ability to power the connection, can I split without powering it?

The switch can be anywhere as long as you can get a cable to the router & another to the device. A pair of Homeplug devices could potentially replace one of the cables. Some have multiple ethernet ports on one end so if the new device is near an existing device, one of those could dispense with the switch.

Although if you have power to the router I'm not sure how you can't have power for a switch?

Too much to explain but basically the sockets are concealed and there’s no more room for a larger plug adapter or extension block. Sounds like I don’t need power so I’ll investigate those mentioned above ( TP-Link TL-SG105 and TP-Link TL-SG105S)

You can get adapter faceplates that will convert a single socket into a double or a double into a triple. They simply replace the existing faceplate & screw into the existing back box. Only down side is they're a little deeper than a standar faceplate if space is really tight.
