Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

Thanks Keith

My main problem with all of this is that my service was fine for 2 yrs prior to this issue, then overnight it became a problem... and it seems to be that way for everyone else who is experiencing it too (late december/early january).

If it is something that BT have managed to mess up overnight, why isn't it something that can be resolved within a similar timeframe?

What router or modem+router would you recommend to priotise traffic in my network? At the moment I'm using the generic BT hub and I don't believe it has the QoS options.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

I think its as a result of the huge take up of streaming services like Netflix and YouTube, especially since Christmas. This is pushing many providers` networks to the limit.

If the problem is still there, when you are not streaming video, then I would suspect an issue with errors on your broadband connection.

Priority tends to be given to Value Added Services like streaming content, as that is where the money is to be made.

As long as you are getting the contracted download speed, then neither BT Retail, or any other provider, are going to be interested in network latency, as it does not affect these services.

As for alternative routers, you need to have a good understanding of what you want to acheive, and what setting to use, to see if it can improve the situation.

I have discussed some possible settings already, on other threads.

Here are a couple of suggestions.

TP-Link AC1200 Wireless Dual Band VDSL/ADSL about £67

If you only want single band wireless, then this one.

The TP-Link TD-W9970 for about £40 or less.

They both work will all BT services, including BT YouView.

The other alternative is not to run any streaming services when you are gaming.

I don't think its neccesarily networks being 'pushed to the limits', I just think somewhere in our routing there is a priority being given to streaming services at the expense of all other traffic.. which wasn't the case prior to December.

The time of day and quality of what I'm streaming doesn't matter, even a 360p video at 4am causes issues - whereas I can play online games on 3 different devices with Spotify running on each of them at peak time on a Friday evening and not have a single ping spike above 20.

"The other alternative is not to run any streaming services when you are gaming."

I wasn't aware that when I was buying my internet package I wouldn't be allowed to watch a single low-quality video while playing games.

Part of my living comes from the money I make from gaming and at the moment it's putting unneccesary pressure on my family that every time I have practice or a tournament nobody can watch TV or videos in the entire house.

It might be better then, to get your own separate connection?

But first, It may be cheaper to try a different router. If it does not work out, it can be kept as a spare or returned, as the home hubs are not the most reliable.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

I've tried two 3rd party routers so far (TP-link Archer VR400 and the NETGEAR XR500 Nighthawk Pro Gaming) and it hasn't changed much at all. Using the nighthawk it made the ping spikes a little less consistent but i still can't play a game and watch a youtube video or stream. Hope this helps.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

Just another quick update, been doing a fair amount of research on this. Here are other threads with people experiencing the same issue since december:

[BT - 18 December] Ping spikes every 5 seconds when streaming. Unresolved

[Plusnet - 26 February] Ping spikes when streaming Netflix. Unresolved.

[Plusnet - 5 March] Ping spiking in evenings. Unresolved.

[Plusnet - 7 March] Ping spikes when streaming Netflix. Unresolved.
https://community.plus.net/t5/Fibre-Broadband/My-Ping-and-I/td-p/1619224

In all of these threads, support members are saying the line is fine because tests are coming back OK. Clearly there is a NEW issue with latency/ping while streaming VIDEO content on the openreach network.

I'm not sure what more I can do at this point as a consumer... but it seems like BT need to be informed that these aren't individual cases and all of them are linked.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

Same sort of posts on the Plusnet forum , TalkTalk forum, and Sky forum, so its not just BT Retail. The common factor seems to be that they are all on VDSL connections.

The XR500 is just a router so how were you testing it - connecting it to your SmartHub won't have helped as you need to use a separate VDSL modem.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

I was buying it to see if buffbloat was my issue which it did fix as before getting it i was getting a C result and after i was getting an A result. The router did help with reducing how high the spikes went and also how often they happened but i do still get ping spikes. Website used for testing http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

I asked how you had connected the XR500 as it is just a router - were you still connecting it to your BT SmartHub?
