Unwanted banner ads

Recently I've see an outbreak of full-width banner ads across the top of lots of web pages, these appear to be injected externally rather than delivered by the web page I'm trying to view. Is BT inserting these and if so is there a way to opt out? It's really annoyying.

If your talking about all web pages not just BT ones perhaps you have picked up some malware.

Install and run the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

You should check your browser for any unwanted add ons that may be causing your problem. In Internet Explorer go to the menu bar and click on Tools > Manage Add Ons and check for unwanted toolbars and extensions as well as search providers.
