This is for both you and @licquorice
I have very limited knowledge however I feel my daughter is over complicating things somewhat, looking for a super secure setup. She’s querying the DDNS as a security measure, I’m guessing it isn’t one on its own and is merely to handle the IP aspect?
She’s looking at a VPS whilst using a VPN at server level and wire guard. Whilst I don’t know the specifics it feels like overkill compared to what’s been suggested by Licquorice.
Total overkill. All DDNS does is track a changing IP address.
If she doesn't want to use it, she can just tell her friends her current IP address and they can connect directly.
If you aren't careful, those security steps you take can make you less secure!
I use a DDNS, and it has a couple of devices setup as hosts - if I'm not careful, that could give someone easier access to my network.
The same with using a VPN. I use a VPN when I'm away, that dials back to a VPN server on my home router, doing that adds some security. But using a VPN client on your home router, or from within your network, can, if not properly configured, add an additional route into your network - making it less secure!
*You don't normally need to use a VPN with a VPS.
**I do kind of trust BT, any breaches are far more likely to through incompetence than malice!
