Re: Windows update/activation blocked on our BT connection..

Go to solution

As other ISPs are having the same trouble - such as CommCast - it is not clear where the issue is centred. Logically the only common feature is Microsoft and that will be where somebody is scratching their head.  With a new iteration of W10 - 1903 on the way they need to be sure that big updates work (so far the history is not encouraging).

Tell me about it! I reinstalled Windows 10 recently at 1809. I have scripts running to load network drives (because MS broke them, this DNS issue). I installed Windows 10 on day one. It BSoD on me and reverted to Windows 7. I built a new PC and tried again with the same result (it turned out my graphics card at the time was not Windows 10 compatible, which I carried over to the new PC. No hint that was the issue though! New monitor and new graphics card which uses Windows 10 only features so I had no choice but to downgrade to Windows 10 again! :()

This chaneg of DNS to Googles works for some not others, I have tried 6 DNS servers and all not working with my BT internet, my mobile connection using hotspot with ID moble is ok and updated a Surface tablet earlier ok, that failed on my BT Wifi.

Try rebooting your router, it might pick up different BT DNS numbers. Worth a shot.

i have to report virgion does not have a problem as they don't use BT DNS.

CommCast use BT DNS thats why they have a problem.  Lots of companies use BT phone lines for their service, even SKY use BT in some areas.  BT control all landlines in the UK except for Virgin lines.

In the uk their are two main providers of phone lines BT and Virgin the rest buy time off of them.

@splash3313I think you mean Openreach manages "lines".  BT doesn't - it is an ISP for our purposes here.  BT and Openreach are strongly separated by the regulator to avoid a monopoly/dominant player situation.

@StompaYou are missing something. You can change DNS settings on the wireless adaptor of your device.

Thanks, I must have known that at some point as I had IPv4 set to Quad9. However IPv6 was set to 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'. Once I had set IPv6 to Quad9 as well, windows update worked again.

The fault has to lie with BT and their DNS when you look at the facts:

1. Use alternative DNS - It works

2. Tether to hotspot on mobile (presumably different DNS) - It works

How is this a problem on Microsofts end?

I'm open to any explainations .......

Re: Windows update/activation blocked on our BT connection..

actually you are wrong bt own open reach.

what you are reffereing to is the provider of internet into the uk tat is different but not open reach.

Most people assume that internet and phnone lines are separate they are not.  Bt provide internet and phones lines worldwide.  BT is one of the largest telecomunication companies on the planet.

I was told that it is affect BT customers in the USA as well.

Lots of people think that Bt and open reach are separate companies that is not the case.   Its not the Internet thats at fault but the DNS that the microsoft need to use from BT is being blocked from wworking with the windows update.

DNS from google is not being blocked why is this the simple answer is that BT is being paid not foce its DNS not to work with windows update, cause they are being paid to do this, by either Google or Apple.

Micrososft told me its a BT issue which they told them about on 30/1/19 but BT dohave done nothing.  Its not in microsofts interest to block BT.  To destroy microsoft all you have to do is block them from the UK one step at a time starting with the windows update.

Setting DNS to Google in our hub seems to have fixed this issue for now
