Windows update problems

Go to solution

I've also been unable to do a windows update since 28th Jan, following message shown on Windows Update section of 'Settings' on my PC:  'We couldn’t connect to the update service. We’ll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn’t work, make sure that you’re connected to the Internet.'

Online sites all mention that it's particularly affecting BT Broadband customers.

Hope this gets sorted out soon.,

Please ignore this - just discovered this issue was caused by a recent update to W10, MS working on a fix - local hosts not reachable.

Here's a strange thing - never seen before and wonder could there be a connection. I can no longer log in to my TP Modem Router via192.168.1.1 using Microsoft Edge, just get an endless revolving blue circle, Instant log in with Google Chrome.

I've seen this bug mentioned over the last week or two and it is a problem with one of the cumulative updates for W10.

Edge not opening router.

This continues to be a problem. The only work around I found was to use Google Public DNS . the instructions can be found here: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using or an easier step by step instructions here https://www.howtogeek.com/164981/how-to-switch-to-opendns-or-google-dns-to-speed-up-web-browsing/

but dont forget to swtich back to BTs automatic DNS once you have completed updating, as there are some privacy issues invovled.

I called the BT helpline two days ago - they were not aware of this issue, and couldn't help.

The best fix is disconnect your WiFi from your computer the connect to BT fon and check updates then disconnect and reconnect to your WiFi network remember to select auto connect.

And what is the best fix if your PC does not have a wireless card and is only able to connect via Ethernet?

Change the DNS setting of the Ethernet (TCP/IP V4) to point to Google 8.8.8.8

Just google "how to change DNS" for your version of windows.

BT DNS is currently pointing to the wrong MS servers, Google's DNS is working great.

BT's DNS servers are pointing to the wrong Microsoft servers.

Google's DNS servers are pointing to the corect Microsoft servers.

The quick fix is to change your PC to point ot Google's 8.8.8.8  DNS server.

Then later (maybe in a week or so) point your PC back to use BT's DNS by removing 8.8.8.8 setting back to automatic.
