Yale Smart Home Alarm connectivity issues with BT Hub

Go to solution

2 years ago I installed Yale Smart Home Alarm and had a BT broadband router.

I had 2 issues with it:-

1) Every 2 weeks the Yale hub would go off line from the web and have to be reset back onto broadband to use the app

2) If there was a power cut the Yale hub would not go back onto broadband without being maually reset.

I complained to Yale who said it was the BT router. When I spoke to BT they said it was the Yale hub.

I ended up confused by technical details from both of them.

However, recently we have a new BT router for digital voice.

Without doing anything else the Yale hub stays online all the time and fully recovers without manual intervention if there is a power cut.

With the old router what was causing the Yale hub to go offline every 2 weeks and not to recover after a power cut??

(the alarm always worked within its own alarm network in the house, but was off the broadband so the phone app could not be used)

The 14 day hub reset happened to some customer  (I also had it) and there was nothing I could do to stop it so I restarted hub late at night so the 14 resets were also happening late when nobody was using internet.  This just stopped itself all of a sudden. All my devices used just reconnect when hub connected to internet without any manual intervention

Re: Yale Smart Home Alarm connectivity issues with BT Hub

Out of curiosity is there anything of interest in the Yale Alarm logs on the app?

I've set up a couple of Yale Smart Alarms at least twice with BT routers.  The only issue that I can recall causing problems is that they don't always play nicely with DHCP.  The answer to that was remove the power from the alarm hub, then turn off its battery backup switch, before rebooting the BT router and letting everything else on the network get an IP.  Then restore power to the Alarm hub and turn on the battery back.  If you don't want the Alarm hub beeping for the next four hours, you'll have to change one of its settings in the app.

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!

Further to my original issue with the Yale alarm going off-line every 2 weeks, and not restoring after a power cut;

We have been moved to BT digital voice and issued with a new BT hub.

The alarm system has now been working perfectly for a few months and comes back on-line automatically after a power cut.

The only change was replacing the BT hub with the new one for digital voice.

Totally conclusive that the issue was with the BT hub.

Shame neither Yale support or BT customer services could sort it out prior to changing the hub .

I have no idea (or wish to know) what the differences in the hubs are, but the fact the issues can be resolved may give others hope!

What chance does a non-computer literate like me have.........
