fixed ip on new router

Go to solution

Hi

I need to have a fixed ip address as it is used in someones firewall to let me through and access an SQL database for the charity i work for.

But i am on BT residential.

And the usual DYNDns wont work (as i understand it) as there is not a fixed ip address that i can use, just a domain.

So my question is, is the fact that i can't have a fixed ip address to do with the BT home hub router? or the BT residential line?

In other words, I have a nice draytek router here, can i use that and get myself a fixed ip address?

many thanks.

BT do not offer fixed IP addresses on residential lines it has nothing to do with your router.

As an alternative to moving to a business broadband package you could always use a VPN service that provides you with a private static IP (e.g. PureVPN) for when accessing the database. Cost is around $2 per month on top of the VPN (which is useful to have anyway)

You could also speak to the charity and see if they could terminate a VPN on there firewall or other network equipment.
