Welcome to this user forum. @janetwilson1956

Are you talking about the network setting on a Windows computer?

Which BT Home hub are they using?

Re: public versus private network

On Windows 10, a public connection simply means they cannot access any local network resources like file shares. It does not mean that people have access to their Internet.

A private connection means that their computer has access to other devices on their local network, like printers.

Here is one of many sites which explain it https://www.howtogeek.com/245982/whats-the-difference-between-private-and-public-networks-in-windows...

Not unless they know their wireless password. If they are concerned, then suggest that they  change it.

Re: public versus private network

internet fibre set up six months ago 18 month contract. Superfast not in their area yet. Nota business account either, just personal. The first bill was ok the price was right since then the monthy costs have spiralled.

Re: public versus private network

Can you confirm which actual package he is on. I am not sure if BT still do a limited fibre package or if they are all now unlimited.

If he is on a limited package and he is using it to watch movies etc that could explain the high costs. If he is on an unlimited package the cost would not change regardless of how much data he used.

It could be that his neighbour has got his wireless password somehow and is using his connection. In any event it might be worth changing the password just to be sure it can not be accessed.

To do that see link.
