Abusive Calls

Ok I need some advice. My elderly inlaws are receiving abusive calls from someone, and they've now started to ignore any "Number witheld" calls.  Trouble is they have a few international friends abroad and I think this will also show as Witheld. Is there anyway they can find the number who is calling them so they can report it to BT?,

or a suggested alternative.

many thanks

Re: Abusive Calls

If you are receiving persistent nuisance calls, please contact our specialist advisors at the Nuisance Call Advice Line on 0800 661 441 (open Monday to Friday, 8am to 10pm, and Saturday, 9am to 6pm). However, if you are receiving abusive, threatening or obscene calls, malicious or otherwise distressing to you, then you should report them to the police.

Re: Abusive Calls

I had that happen to me for a while, i kept a referee whistle next to the phone and when i received the call blew as hard as i could down the receiver, calls stopped immediately (funny that) failing that i've heard that just place the receiver next to the phone and walk away go back in a litt;e while then hang up if they've got no one to insult they will soon give up to theoir cost.  hope this is helpful

Re: Abusive Calls

I've just received a phone call - the 3rd this week- from an Englishman asking us to renew our washing machine cover.

I told him it was the 3rd call & it was illegal.

Oh, why's that? was his reply & I told him to get lost.

He called straight back & said, Don't you talk to me like that, you muppet!

I shouted something rude & he hung up.

I did 1471 & got 02030 629018 which I dialled. There was no connection at all.I'm furious. Does anyone know what this strange number is, how I can report him & how I can stop these calls?

It's a scam. The person tries, as you say, to get cover for a machine bought a few years ago - which some people will have forgotten. The thing to do is ask what make/model they have for you - don't tell the anything.

The scammers are using VoIP systems spoofing the number. The numbers isn't strange, it' a London number - if written (correctly?) is 020 3062 9018. It's in a valid BT range.

If the same number calls again and again, and you're with BT - you can use the BT Call Protect (free) service, but if as expected they keep changing the calling from number, then there isn't really much you can do in general.

There are various phone systems/appliances that can be bought to only let calls in you want to receive. Naturally you'll have to "tell" these systems your contacts when they call. That way they build up a list, and block (or send to voicemail) calls you don't want.

Re: Abusive Calls

Many thanks Andy. I called the number several times but it's silent. There's no connection noise at all!

But thanks for your information. Very useful & I'll hang on to it.

I really should shrug it off, but I got really angry with his rudeness!
