Hi the phone socket is the leftmost on the top row. The interference sound is annoying but you can still hear who you're talking to.

Is the noise still there if you connect things up as shown below? Any extension wiring should be connected to that bottom removable section. If not, then your internal phone wiring is incorrect.

I have opened the socket and plugged the microfilter directly into the test socket (and there is no dial on the upstairs extension socket). Unfortunately the background noise is still there.

Then there must be something wrong with the phone, especailly as the corded phone works fine.

I replaced the socket plate and screwed it back together. The background noise somehow has now gone. Even though it was there with the test socket.

It could be the phone but the timing of the start of the problem suggested it wasn't.
