BT8500 base unit - endless cycle of charging / beep / lost connection

Hi, I have a BT8500 unit with answer phone.  When I place the handset in the base unit, an endless cycle kicks off where the handset says charging, then there's beeps from phone and from base, then normal handset screen appears, then the beeps again, then back to "charging".  After about 2 cycles of this, the phone says link to base station has been lost and then the cycle carries on.  And on.  And on.

I've reset base, reset handset, replaced batteries, unplugged the base unit, re-registered handset, etc.

Any idea what is wrong?
