Crackling sounds on landline and cordless phones

Terrible crackling sounds on my fixed landline and cordless phone. I have done the silent test from main socket and can still hear the cracklings. I dialled 151 and had a test no fault was found but could hardly hear the automated voice due to the loud cracklings could hear the automated voice due to the loud cracklings. Told I will be charged if no fault can be found. This makes me a bit reluctant to book an engineer as I cannot really afford the charge. The other option is to get people to ring me on my mobile. I guess bt cannot guarantee there will be no charge. Thanks

There will be no charge if the line is crackly from the test socket behind the removable faceplate of the master socket.

@cherry76

You would only have to pay if the fault is proven to your own internal wiring or a faulty phone.

If the problem is still there at the test socket, then the fault would be external to your property.
