Landline phone doesn't ring

Neither of the two phones that I've tried in the landline test socket ring when my landline is called. One is a 6 month old BT1000, the other is an old spare phone which definately worked 1 year ago.

When I call it from my mobile I hear the ringing sound from my mobile's speaker.

Outgoing calls work normally.

I can access 1471.

BT test says the only option is to send an engineer and it may cost me ~£113 if it's my fault.

I can't afford ~£113.

The phone was installed when the house was new in 1995.

What do you think the probability is it's a fault with my equipment ?

Re: Landline phone doesn't ring

Welcome to this user forum.

If outgoing calls are fine, then its most likely a fault on the exchange line card, so you will not be charged.

Its unlikely that both phones are faulty, but it would do no harm to borrow another, or try your phone at another house.

Its always a good idea to test phones while plugged into the test socket.

Thanks Keith, I meant to say the test socket - I've edited my post to correct.

Thanks, I am sure the fault is going to be in the exchange, its quite a common fault, as the line cards are very old. An Openreach Exchange Technician will simply change you over to a new equipment number, as they do not change line cards.

Re: Landline phone doesn't ring

Can you just do a quick test? Can you dial your home number from a mobile phone. After it has rung from the mobile a few times pick up the home phone. Does it connect? Can you speak from mobile to home phone?

Re: Landline phone doesn't ring

When you say it doesn't ring what is it doing? Does it ring once then cut off or does it just not ring at all?

If it rings then cuts off once that'll probably be a Rectified Loop. If it doesn't ring at all chances are it'll be a faulty LIC or Concentrator in the Exchange.

Dave, I got a friend to call me and - there was no ringing, I picked up, and we could speak normally.

Re: Landline phone doesn't ring

Then is likely to be a faulty line card in the exchange. If you have reported it, you will just have to wait for Openreach to visit the exchange.
