Lost dial tone but broadband still active?

I've had the above fault (line loses dial tone but BB still works) on a few of the lines I'm responsible fo. I am reporting them to BT and getting them fixed, but I am purplexed as to how a line can work at all if there's a break?

Re: Lost dial tone but broadband still active?

there is no need for a break in the line to lose dial tone it can be an exchange fault also broadband can work while a line is faulty though normally at a reduced speed as the broadband service can still work with only one of the pair of wires connected

Re: Lost dial tone but broadband still active?

These faults were deffo line pair faults (crackles before dial tone lost).

I can't understand how BB will run on one half of a pair though? I would have thought that the electrical circuit would be incomplete.

Re: Lost dial tone but broadband still active?

the voice line requires the pair to be a complete circuit however broad band operates on a radio frequencies therefore not needing the pair but however its performance may not be as good
