I am just a forum member, but worked for BT for nearly 42 years (now retired), so I know how the exchanges work, which is why I do not expect any problems.
There is just no automatic process in place for the sales people to allocate a "stopped" line, as that could be open to abuse, especially if it happened to be a business customer after the number of another ceased business, to poach their customers.
