Swapping telephone lines

Go to solution

Can someone advise the best way to do this?

I have 2 BT phone lines coming into my house.

One is very old and has a connection box on the roofline that is missing it's cover, so is exposed to the elements. The cable is very long and has two ("GPO") junction boxes along it's length. During wet and windy weather calls are poor quality and broadband perfomance falls.

The other line is very much newer, comes straight into the house without junction boxes etc, but is currently disconnected.

I'd like to have them swapped so the newer cable & socket is active and the old, poor quality, one is dead and could even be removed.

It's sort of a fualt, biat also sort of a new install?

Who do I need to contect?

I tried the usual customer services but they seemed confused about whether it was a new install or a repair needed.

Welcome to this user forum.

If there is no fault, then BT Retail would not be interested.

Have you reported the fault when you lose the phone and broadband connection?

Yes, report the working line as faulty with intermittent disconnections and then ply the engineer that arrives with tea and biscuits to swap the connections at the pole.

Re: Swapping telephone lines

Hi and thanks for the advice.

We’d previously reported the fault as intermittent noise on the line.

It is only really bad during windy and wet weather and all we got from BT is “we’ve tested the line and it reports no faults”.

I’ll raise it as a fault again and be more persistent this time.

I’ll stock up on Jaffa cakes and Chocolate digestives, too.

Many thanks!
