crackling phone line

My phone line makes a lot of crackling noise, which can be heard here and by the person at the other end of the call. This has been happening for some time but is now really bad. I had a BT phone and have just tried a new one - no better.

I had the same problem 2 or 3 years ago, when it got so bad that I also lost the broadband connection. It was eventually solved when the engineer found that the underground box at the bottom of the drive was flooded. It has since been replaced but the tarmac is still sunken so that water pools on top of it.

It took several very long phone calls and having to run pointless diagnostic tests in the house before I convinced BT that an engineer was needed, and I really don't want to have to go through all that again when the symptoms are the same. Is there a short cut to getting an engineer here?

Re: crackling phone line

No, you need to report it as a noisy line fault. Make sure the line is noisy when connected to the test socket to ensure it is not your wiring causing the problem.
