BT Internet IMAP Mail?

Can anyone give the definitive answer here about IMAP on btinternet.com?

It works fine on my iPhone and iPad using Yahoo with my btinternet.com address, but I've seen conflicting views about desktop clients like Outlook or Apple Mail.

It's a major PITA not being able to use the btinternet email as IMAP although I've seen people claim to have it working.

Hi.

See this post from Allan on this topic :-

note that it uses different servers and port numbers, and you'll have to put in the whole email address including @btinternet.com

Re: BT Internet IMAP Mail?

Thanks guys, the settings worked, BUT, the account doesn't behave like IMAP.

For example, if I delete a mail from the inbox on my iPad or iPhone, it is deleted from both these devices, but not in Outlook on my PC.

Is Outlook on your PC using IMAP or POP? If it's POP then IMAP (or web) changes won't change what it's already downloaded using POP.

Following Keith_Beddoe's advice I just set up IMAP access, but for Windows Live Mail instead of Thunderbird. In the properties section for the account I was then able to set it to "Store special folders on IMAP server" and I had to rename them to Sent, Drafts, Trash and Spam to have them match what Yahoo uses. Now when I delete a message it gets moved to Trash on the server and best yet, when I send an email it goes to the same folder as when I send an email from webmail! You may need to do something similar for Thunderbird.

Re: BT Internet IMAP Mail?

Following this discussion can any clever soul tell me why IMAP is used now and we don't have the choice of using POP?

My limited knowledge is that when POP was used you connected to server to download any new messages for as long as they took to load? With IMAP you remain connected for as long as you want and so can download messages on demand?

Using Mac Mail it now creates all kinds of problems - from timing out, requesting password, not sending regular emails to my Inbox but to my Bulk (Spam) box whereas with POP I never had to check Bulk (only for viagra or helping Nigeria invest money!). POP instantly loaded emails on opening Mail but now I literally have to quit Mail and reopen it to get emails to load.

Not sure if I'm right but I guess IMAP is used to aid people 'on the go' with iPhones and iPads etc?
I would love to have a no fuss POP back and get my important emails where they should be - my Inbox - and not hunt through junk or have to go to some Webmail. What happened to straight forward convenience?

Re: BT Internet IMAP Mail?

With IMAP you do not have to remain connected.  It might be in your default settings but you can choose not to if you wish - it will be in the email client options.

Can you tell me how you got your BT account to work as IMAP?  Mine is still stuck on POP which I hate.

Re: BT Internet IMAP Mail?

Thanks. Yes, that's how I have it setup on my iPhone and iPad, but when I put that into Mac Mail, it still says 'Account type: Yahoo! POP'.
