BT6500 Base Station Can't "Find" new handset

I bought an additional handset to add to my BT6500 "Duo". When I pressed the "Find" button so I could register the new handset nothing happened - the base station should go beep and the "in-use" led should start flashing. I called the help desk, they said the Base station was faulty and should be replaced (still under warranty, from ASDA). I did this but the next one had exactly the same problem. Called the helpdesk, carried out the same tests, they said that base station was also faulty and should be taken back to ASDA for replacement. I did this and ..... you guessed it - exactly the same problem. Anybody out there got any ideas?

You said "press". Did you hold it in for a few seconds?
