Re: Premier League - not showing game on final day of season!?!?!

Historically other broadcasters who did not have Sunday rights other than SKy have covered a game on the final day of the season ...so you had effectively 3 games live  (2 on Sky  . 1 non sky) simultaenous coverage.

Re: Premier League - not showing game on final day of season!?!?!

I'm fairly sure BT could have kept a game for Sunday. I don't have a succinct explanation as to what they did instead but I believe it has been speculated with reason by those who follow this closely that their packs allow one of their 38 games to be on during the last gameday of the season - to some extent if they wished - but the situation was that they choose to use that option in an earlier round of games or the situation developed over the season so as that they were effectively forced to use it at a point prior to the last round. Possibly that game was perceived as worth more to them earlier in the year, when they could choose an impressive looking fixture, whereas they could be left with a very tight option left over if they had reserved a game until the very last day.

Re: Premier League - not showing game on final day of season!?!?!

They're choice of games for the last few weeks have been poor to say the least, mainly effecting teams in mid-table

As was said above, previously under Setanta and ESPN one game was shown by them on the final Sunday, either it's a specification of the new deal not allowing anyone other than Sky to show a game from the final day or they have for some reason chosen to show all of their 38 games earlier in the season.

In fact, if the latter was the case it seems odd that they chose to show West Ham v Spurs last week when they could have shown a game from the final day.

Either way, it doesn't seem to be good value for money, it's a bit like Sky having the exclusive rights to show the FA Cup up to and including the semi-finals but BBC having exclusive rights to the final!

Thwy only had 26 weekend lunchtime games, the other 12 are bank holiday/new year games so it was never going to be the case that they would have 1 game each week of the competition.

Actually BT had rights for 38 matches .... there are actually 38 rounds of fixtures.

Whilst the norm would for BT to have the Saturday lunchtime fixture not all of the 38 rounds are scheduled to have such a fixture. Looks like BT must have traded their Round 38 game for an extra match in an earlier round of fixtures.  I suspect they did similar tradeoff on a couple of Saturdays when they showed FA Cup games.

The number of games BT have and the number of rounds only match by coincidence.

BT bought two packages of games. One package gave them 26 Saturday lunchtime kick offs and the other package gave them 2 games in each midweek round and 2 more saturday kick offs.

They don't have a game in every round, in fact they had 2 in every midweek round so there have been 5 saturdays when they don't have a game.

This isn't any kind of "tradeoff."  We knew in July 2012 that Bt would have 5 weekends without a game.
