2 modem same house why?

for the last five years had to have 2 modems in the house 1 for work the other for family why ? because the internet speed is so poor, how any company is allowed to say fastest speed you can get is 5meg (my area copper line) then tell you 'but we only guarentee 1 meg download'. so for five years managed a steady 5 meg on both until last month one now only a fraction over 1 at best. bt tried to help sent 2 new devices followed by a nice engineer who changed all the

sockets and checked the speed after a few days of dismal speed i phoned again because i now have a 1 meg connection on 1 and the second is between 4.6 -6 ?.everthing is right in bt's eyes and they wont do anything else.my question is how 2 identical hubs 6 feet apart identical set up give such a huge differance in download speed. As a footnote please bt don't tell people 1 meg is fine its insulting ...................

Your hubs may be identical and position similar but your lines are not identical - no 2 lines are the same even if appear to be fed from same source.
