If you are considering a 1gbps or higher internet package, then please calculate your usage first!

*Link Remove*

(I am NOT posting this for spam, despite the calculator linking to deals at the end. It's an American site anyway so the deals are useless here.)

With the recent news of a 2.5gbps package being released and people commenting on it saying they need the speed, I thought I would link you to a calculator to see how much you really use and need instead.

I also see a lot of posts on here or other forums where people say that they need 1gbps or over despite almost noting in the world being able to utilise that much bandwidth!

So before you waste your money on a connection you are probably never going to fully utilise, try this calculator to see how much you really need. You might be surprised, and you might actually save by sticking to a lower speed!

But otherwise, if that higher speed package is cheap as chips for you, then go ahead. I'm not trying to stop you, just trying to make you aware.

There are links within the website you have posted which are to ecommerce sites.  Regardless of which country they are in it is against forum rules to post them however you can name the site and advise users to seek it out.

Ok, I can't edit the post now. So I am happy for it to be deleted instead.

It is not "someone finding a problem" It is the forum rules which every member is expected to adhere to. I will not delete it I will leave it for a moderator to amend the link if required.

Your post is not against the rules, it is that the link might be because of the ecommerce sites. All that is need is you tell users what site to check out rather than post a link to it.

Obviously you can post links to BT and its partner sites.

EDIT: Perhaps you should post your messages after you have thought about its content rather than editing them when some one, in this case me, is in the process of replying to them . This will allow others to see what the reply is responding to.

Sorry, I am used to places like Reddit where you can edit your comments anytime. I post as I am thinking because my mind is always going over said post after it's been posted, like what to add to it or alterations, or at least until the other person has posted their reply.  For me a post is never finished until it goes away in my mind.

I edited the main post about 10 times before I was happy with it, and before the time limit expired of course 😄

Links notwithstanding, I must say I agree with you.

Having worked in tech support, I can’t understand what anyone outside of a business is going to do with 1Gb/s, let alone 2.5.  If you are an avid gamer that frets about every millisecond then maybe you will see some benefit but for most of us, I doubt it.  All connections have two ends, so you are never going to go faster than the slowest link anyway, no matter how fast your end is.

The reality is that most of us are already at speeds where stability, reliability and cost are now the issues, not more raw speed.

Re: If you are considering a 1gbps or higher internet package, then please calculate your usage firs

Yes exactly, there are very few places on the internet where more than 1gbps can be used.

Steam, Playstation/Xbox, cloud file storage, and speed tests are among the only few places that can really use such a speed. Even 500mbps is overkill most of the time if you are the only one using it.

When are such people just going to be happy? When they have 5gbps, 10gbps... maybe 1tbps? It's not only that, People are spending their money, money that is needed on more essential things, in a need for speed that will never fully satisfy them for at least a few decades yet.

I mean just look at the people who took out the 1.6gbps packages, and found out too late that it was still on a trial, and now they are wishing for their older and slower service back. If that doesn't spell out the caution of "look before you leap", I don't know what does.

And now with a 2.5gbps package having just being launched by another ISP... are people going to keep repeating these same lessons over and over again?

So I think we need an education on just how much bandwidth we all really use, and how much we all really need. So we don't go rushing into the higher speeds and coming back disappointed.

I really hope the calculator I linked to, or at least showing how to get to, if the post will be decided to be edited instead of deleted (Or I can be happy to just repost instead without the link if requested to do so.), will help educate us on just how much we need.
