Replacement rechargeable batteries not charging

The batteries on my rather old Quad phone were not recharging .

I bought new rechargeable batteries,   AAA Ni-MN 1.2V 850mAh and put them in the phone.

The base is lit but the handset is completely blank, no lights at all.  

They have been in for 18 hours now but still nothing.

Any thoughts ?

as the original batteries were not recharging and even the new batteries are not charging is it possible the problem is the base charger is not working not a battery problem

I have tried them on 2 different bases with the same result.

The handset that I swapped over immediately began chatting the (old ) batteries that were in it, so the base is clearly working.

Is there aomething that I should/can do that I am missing ?

The batteries are now charging after , for the umpteenth time, I put them in and out again.
