I ended up forking out 140 for a new aerial. It seems to have resolved. I still have a gut instinct that it is still a common reception fault with the bt box.
The bt engineer even implied that these boxes aren't great for picking up certain frequencies.
If it happens again, I will get a refund from bt for the new aerial. How can it be ok in a normal tv, but not via the box. It has got to be a fault with bt. We are conned every single way.

Thanks, I agree it has to be something to do with the box.  I believe that these are also made by Humax though so can't understand why the difference.

I've got anorther aerial I can try as a direct connection so will see if that yields any better results.
