Future box update

“Hi Everyone,

I can confirm that the statement that YouView have released over on their community is correct. Things will be a little different from now on, we’ll bring new features and updates to BT set top boxes based on our customer feedback rather than generic updates across BT, TalkTalk and Plusnet.

Firstly to optimise performance of our longest serving set-top box we'll update the BT YouView H3 (DTR1000) boxes differently from the rest from now on. These boxes were designed for a range of services which were available at that time and now these services have evolved it’s putting extra strain on these boxes which can lead to poor performance.

Our focus will now be on maintaining quality and performance of these boxes for you to continue to enjoy the features you have already, but you won't be able to get all of the features that other boxes might get in the future.  The next update on the H3 (DTR1000) box will, however, give you the ‘hide channel’ feature as we know this is a feature that customers are missing.

We’ll announce more details soon.”

Youview have updated their community and you can read the full artilce from this link

Cheers

Neil

Re: Future box update

So BT offer a BT service on BT YouView Boxes. However, BT’s “older” boxes cannot cope with some of the new features so BT  will  “focus will now be on maintaining quality and performance of these boxes for you to continue to enjoy the features you have already, but you won't be able to get all of the features that other boxes might get in the future.”

That is to say, I may have the top package that BT offer, but because my BT YouView Box can’t cope, I may not receive the same functionalitity that someone else receives, on the same package, if they have a newer box.

How is this great?

Re: Future box update

Not sure if it is good or bad.
Good in that it frees BT to push in its direction and possibly free from the shackles of trying to keep multiple partners with totally different objectives happy.
Bad in that it is a worry how thin this will spread the YouView programming team that were already struggling even to keep the new interface updated with lost functionality on anything like a regular timeframe.
I suppose only time will tell how this will go.

I do think dropping the older boxes is the right thing to do to push forward, hopefully BT will do a good deal to swap out anyone on an older box so they won’t miss out.

Re: Future box update

All kit has its lifespan and the T1000 is no different. What is deifferent, however, is that they will still continue to be maintained and supported, unlike many other platforms with older kit we could mention.

Agreed, but maintained to a lower standard.

Re: Future box update

Seems T1000s will never get back the functionality removed from them by this Next Gen farce nor be allowed to return to Old Gen even though BT have taken more control of the position.

This is a despicable way to treat the most loyal long term customers.
