Re: HD Signal Strength and Quality Issue

Go to solution

The amplifier was fitted before I moved into the house and I have been here over 12 years.

it is a Wolsey 6+1 signal amplifier. It has 2 aerial connectors at the bottom and 7 down the side, marked Full then 1-6.

How would you cope if you only lived 10 miles from the transmitter?

My local Maplin has one of those variable attenuators in stock.

Signal strength is currently 91-92% and Quality varies from  70 to 60 then down to zero.

If dropping the signal level does not improve the quality, then I would suspect an issue with either the aerial system, or a faulty YouView box, which is unlikely on two different boxes.

I assume you have tried restarting the YouView box to see if its any better? I know we had issues with breakup on certain SD channels, which cleared when I restarted to box.

Have you tried interchanging the outputs of the amplifier so that the YouView box is fed from a different outlet, just in case there is a faulty outlet, as amplifiers do go faulty, especially if there have been thunderstorms.

If all else fails, the you would need to get a qualified aerial installer to check the aerial alignment and signal levels.

I can't fathom the set up.

There is a black aerial cable that runs from the roof so obviously from the aerial itself. That goes into 1 on the side of the amplifier. There are then 3 brown aerial cables in Full, 2 and 2.

There is then another brown aerial cable connected in one of the 2 sockets at the bottom.  This with Full, 2 and 3 must be the cables for the 4 sockets in the house.

BT sent me a replacement Youview box thinknig that was the fault. I am using the new one so both boxes were doing the same thing.

The aerial has been fine until recently, never had an issue before.

Do you mean a restart by switching off at the back of the box or a factory reset?

Not a factory reset, just a power down and power up again. You can just try powering down by holding the power button down. Cannot remember whether that just initiates a restart, or a shutdown.

Did you see my edit regarding interchanging the outlets?

I tried a power down but no good.

I have just read your edit.

I assumed the aerial connectors at the bottom of the amplifier, 2 of them, would be the input for the main aerial but this is connected to one of the 7 on the side.

There is no way of knowing which of the 4 brown cables are for the living room socket.

Disconnect each one in turn until you lose the signal on the YouView box.

There should only be one input from the aerial, all the rest should be outputs.

The black cable is from the aerial itself. The brown ones feed the sockets. I am mystified why the black cable doesn't go in the bottom.
