Re: Unable to order Ultra HD

Go to solution

Well the UHD box wasn't delivered today, I called BT and apparently it's been cancelled, without notifying me can I add.

So I've been back in touch and have been told my line isn't capable albeit I get 54mbps.

Totally wasted a days annual leave, not for the first time from BT either as had problems on my initial order in January too

So the advisor who said I could have it on Monday, Chris, is calling me back apparently as his colleagues don't know how he put the order in

I received my 'Welcome to Ultra HD' email yesterday too with my discount code off of a LG UHD from BT, I assumed all was well. Not a happy bunny

oh oh plus the person (Sujal - BT order department) from webchat were very unhelpful, asked numerous times to make a complaint and she ignored me. Asked for webchat to be emailed to me, funnily enough that also hasn't arrived (junk checked)

Re: Unable to order Ultra HD

So BT customer services actually the worst I've ever used, text this morning promising call back between 15:00 and 17:00... Funnily enough they never called. After 60+ minutes with customer services who advised line isn't fast enough they put me through to tech

tech advised line is quick enough but that although the exchange is multicast enabled it's a simpler form of multicast and Ultra HD isn't enabled. That explains that then.

Another thing, when I added Sky Sports HD on 18 October, BT extended my contract for a further 12 months. I challenged this and apparently it was done by mistake. Surely that's enough to terminate my contract without termination fees?

Re: Unable to order Ultra HD

This tech talk of only a simpler form of multicast available is not something I've heard of before and sounds dubious to me.

You can see from the checker results that your line supports Fibre Multicast. You can also see that your clean range minimum speed is 39.8. BT state that for UHD your line must support at least 44 and I think that is the figure that they compare it against. So that would be a simple explanation for why the system won't enable UHD for your line. Normally they wouldn't even let you order it in that situation?

The system did initially state that you couldn't order it, which is what I would expect given your checker results.

Sky's 4K content is also rumoured to require you to be able to order their up to 80mbps product, I believe they don't let people who get less than 50mbps order it and that's why you have to call them to check.

Re: Unable to order Ultra HD

Hopefully not the case then unless there's a bump up in my connection as my UHD is pretty wasted at the mo
Think these ISP need to have a look at the speeds provided. I was with Virgin Media a couple of years ago and was receiving 152mbps then.
Virgin Media not available where I live now and as far as I'm aware no UHD content planned/announced

It's not like I live in the sticks

Re: Unable to order Ultra HD

If Sky deliver live UHD channels over satellite then the broadband speed won't matter for those. They will of course probably also offer on-demand UHD content over the broadband and a speed requirement might be applied for that, though don't forget that on-demand programmes/films can be slowly fully pre-downloaded before being viewed if necessary.

BT have the problem of providing a live UHD channel over the broadband. It's probably a lot cheaper than delivering over satellite but more complicated as virtually every customer has a different broadband configuration and connection speed. The speed can also vary over time after re-connections. Broadcast signals to satellite dishes is a much simpler system for trying to ensure that all customers can receive the same services (though still not perfect).

Re: Unable to order Ultra HD

I'm sure the ISP's are certainly looking into the speeds provided. Their whole future business model including TV depends on it. But apart from Virgin and a few small specialist fibre-to-the-home or 4G based ISP's they can only offer better speeds and services when Openreach develop and roll-out the better phone line based infrastructure solutions.
