Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

No BT TV for me, only PC's, no XBox, at any one time the most I'll have running will be the Mrs downstairs on Netflix (net limited to 1MB/s) , son on youtube / gaming, me gaming and streaming Tidal (net limited to 500KB/s), that's all it takes to destroy my gaming connection.

Ok - that rules out any specific package being managed differently.

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

Looks like BT has fixed it, I'm annoyed though because there has been ZERO communication regarding whether a fix was happening, ZERO communication regarding acknowledging there was a problem ZERO help from anyone at BT apart from sending an engineer out ZERO communication regarding what the problem was and ZERO communication regarding why it won't happen again in the future. Heck maybe it hasn't been fixed and everyone has been out in the sun today and not using the internet ?

My usual test of spamming tracks on Tidal - I can see Tidal is loading the next track a lot faster, next to zero effect on the ping to the Overwatch server, zero packet loss as well. I also ran a 4K video with Tidal, no major increase in ping times, generally working as you'd expect.

What it looked like a few days ago -

I'd guess the fix has been down London sorting out the core network and / or edge routers - as per what I noticed on the trace route.

I hope everyone else also sees an improvement...

Will have to undo all my QOS and see if it works better now. I'll actually be over the moon if they have!

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

yeah I'll take some of that back, Tidal wasn't set to stream at hifi quality, with Tidal on hifi quality I'm seeing ping spikes up to 40ms from about 16, still a vast improvement compared to 100's of ms. If it stops at this level that'll probably get to through  a few months then I'll switch ISP when my exit fees are lower.

To all that have continuing issues would you agree that this part of the terms and conditions applies???
section 10 f
If you have regular or repeated, continuous or irregular faults with the bt broadband, or we agree that the standard or service you get is consistently below what you might expect, we may, after individual assessment, let you end the agreement early without paying a charge for leaving early.

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

If anyone wants to provide a  'tracert' dump or 'ping tracer' screen shot I'll help to diagnose it, I'm in the midlands  - Leicestershire and the route to the Overwatch server goes straight down to London from the exchange. If your routes include other IP addresses (hops) you might be going via some other over loaded BT router.

so DOS prompt and 'tracert 185.60.112.157', if you see a line with '*' then run it again.

Also another thought is BT offers 3 other packages 'BROADBAND' , 'SUPERFAST FIBRE ESSENTIAL' and 'SUPERFAST FIBRE', none of these mention gaming and Sky I believe traffic shape their bottom package, so if you're not on  'SUPERFAST FIBRE 2' it's possible BT have decided to reduce your connection quality.

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 (my gateway)
2 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 172.16.17.59
3 * 7 ms 7 ms 31.55.186.177
4 9 ms 9 ms 8 ms 31.55.186.184
5 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms host213-121-192-120.ukcore.bt.net [213.121.192.120]
6 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms peer2-et-7-0-0.slough.ukcore.bt.net [109.159.252.112]
7 9 ms 8 ms 8 ms 195.66.226.234
8 16 ms 16 ms 15 ms ae1-br01-eqld5.as57976.net [137.221.79.33]
9 14 ms 14 ms 49 ms et-0-0-2-br02-eqam1.as57976.net [137.221.65.91]
10 14 ms 14 ms 17 ms et-0-0-67-pe01-eqam1.as57976.net [137.221.78.71]
11 15 ms 15 ms 15 ms 185.60.112.157

You might want to also just do 'ping 85.60.112.157 -t' and watch for any 'no responses' - dropped packets.
