BT goods return

I placed an order to upgrade my broadband to fibre, BT offered me a digital phone. 6 weeks later they cancelled the order because they could not give me my existing landline phone number, which they originally said I could have??? They had in the meantime sent me a new SmartHub, which they have now asked me to send back, or pay £50. I have replaced the order for the fibre broadband without the digital phone, keeping my existing landline and number, and was told that I should still send the Hub back and they would send me another one. Does anybody have any experience of this and how I might successfully intervene to prevent this nonsense and just keep the Hub they have previously sent me and stop them sending me another one.

Also, does anybody know why they can’t just transfer my existing landline number to the digital phone system?
