I have recently moved house . Broadband not being activated until 19th May. I have EE 4G hub. Question - do I need BT Hub to make this work?

No, it works separately on the EE mobile network as long as you have a live EE SIM in it.

I have never put a sim in myself. Would it have come with a sim?

Yes. How old is it? If it's on PAYG the SIM might have expired due to non-use.
