Another 3rd Party Router on FTTP Question

I've finally got my 300Mb FTTP but don't want to use the SmartHub2.

I failed miserably to get my Asus DSL-N66U to work with the ONT, despite lots of good advice on the forum.  I suspect it's because it is a combined modem/router and it all gets a bit complicated,  so I'm just going to buy a new device which is router only plus AX WiFi and some gigabit ports.  I might even buy a mesh device to cover the whole house - it should future proof me for quite a while.  I'm leaning toward another Asus or a Netgear but TBH i'm not fussy.

So this question is for anyone who has a working 3rd party router on FTTP that they are happy with.  It covers the settings that either I can't find on t'interweb or where there is some contradiction in the recommended settings I've found.  I hope you can help me.

Please tell me:

  1. What make/model you have?
  2. Is Transfer Mode set to VDSL or Ethernet WAN?
  3. Is 802.1Q enabled and if so is VLAN set as 101 or something else?
  4. I know I need PPPoE but is PPP Authorisation set to CHAP, PAP or Auto?
  5. Is NAT enabled?
  6. Do I need to copy the Default Gateway, Primary DNS and Secondary DNS IP addresses from my SmatHub2 or do I leave these vaues blank?
  7. Any other non-default settings that I need to change?
  8. Anything else I forgot that you learned on the way?

Many thanks, Ian
