In the telephone discussions leading up to my posting above (message 257, 09-07-2021), in which BT's solution to the 'synchronising' problem was sort of resolved, I was given the following information:
Synchronising BT Cloud actually only provides a repository, i.e. a backup (like what you could achieve by using an external HDD connected to your PC/laptop). Separate repositories appear for each device and are not accessible from the other device. It was explained to me that to get access from both devices and to get changes made on one device to be available to the other device, the relevant files/folders had to be in the BT Cloud folder on the particular device(s). This is an absolute pain as all my pointers for various programs (pictures, videos, documents, music) would have to be changed. I find this unacceptable after using my device with pointers to appropriate locations.
I had a whinge about this on the thread Re:BTCloud 21.4.10 (BT Community>Broadband>Broadband Extras & Apps from BT>Re: BT Cloud 21.4.10) and got a reply (Message 19, 08-07-2021) which said the following:
@Old_Deuteronomywrote:The only disappointment I now have (as I've only just got a second device, i.e. the laptop) is that to be able to access files on both devices, I have to put my files into the BT Cloud folder. Be hanged if I'm going to reset all my pointers for the various programs whose data I want to access.
If you want to put the files backed up from the first device onto the laptop the simplest way is to use Selective Download. Then use the Cloud directory to transfer changed files.
Thus far, I haven't been able to see if this works, as I have had other, more pressing, matters to deal with in life, but eventually, hope to see if it works, but I'm not holding my breath. It will be a pain copying the shared files back to their proper locations when I have done the necessary work. Anyone here may want to try the suggestion if they wish.
Meanwhile, my 'synchronised' files, like others above, seem to be several days behind. It's just as well I have a Western Digital My Passport external HDD that backs up every hour or on my command. Trying to share files across devices with BT Cloud is less useful than a chocolate fireguard, but what can you expect from something that is 'free'?
I'm utterly mystified at the way this debate between JTS1 and RW has gone. I am using Backup and it is backing up my selected folders continuously without problems, and I can download selected items as required. Sync has never been activated and is not required at all either for backup or restore.

If you look at RW's screenshots of his sysmenu, the sync icon during installation shows that it is syncing despite his sync Preferences having been turned off.
The discussion wasn't really about Sync and Backup, it was about the BT Cloud icon being missing from the sysmenu and the things that can cause this during installation.
I have sent a private message to RW to explain further and the discussion is now over.

Well nothing from BT. Promised me answer by now. Kudos to you guys who have it working. I have tried everything but can't get past the meta data initialisation stage.
Conclusion I have (as can replicate on two different laptops) is that something went awry in the last update with my account. As others don't have same issue I am stumped.
I view this as a paid for service (its not a freebie). Poor customer experience, time to reassess whether I should still be a customer.

I uninstalled BT Cloud completely then reinstalled from https://conf-btpc-prod.uk-uxb.synchronoss.com/snc-repo/data/SyncDrive/download?client=pc and it niw appears to be working.
That's good, please advise me when the installation is complete.

The discussion is over because I've uninstalled BT Cloud and no longer care. It's clear to me that you still have difficulty understanding the difference between backup and sync. Sync is not required to be enabled to allow backup to function, as has been confirmed by another user. This is a fact no matter how many times you assert otherwise.
It's always been about your advice being incorrect. That you are now steering it away from the sync/backup discussion because it's inconvenient that you're wrong, and towards the missing icon (that I have also explained the relation to sync) speaks volume about your lack of understanding.
My tolerance for bull is low, and has very much tested by your poor, misinformed advice.
Goodbye...!
I know things have gone quiet on this subject but I'm still on version 20.6.1. The last time I tried to update it I had problems with a series of conflicts so I've chosen to rely of other backups.
What is the current position?
How do I now update to the latest version?
What is the latest version?
Might I end up with conflicts again?
In my case, it was working reliably but since the latest auto-update to 21.8.9, i am no longer able to upload big files successfully (4GB plus). It seems to work okay with small files.
Auto update to version 21.8.9 is mentioned, just checked my version and it is at 21.4.10, does something need to be done to trigger auto update ?
