Broadband download speed

When I had Fibre Essential the download speed was usually about 21 Mbps. I now have Fibre 1 but the download speed has not changed. Is this normal?

moving to fibre 1 from essential does not mean you automatically get faster speed as it will depend on what your line can handle  if on essential package and you could not het max connection speed of 40mb then moving to fibre 1 will not increase your conenction speed

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the stats from your router (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser) and if  HH5 then go to troubleshooting then helpdesk and if HH6/SH2 then advanced settings then technical log information . 

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

As I said initially your line cannot handle any faster speed so the upgrade to fibre 1 will not give you any faster speed than you had on BT Essential

are you using the test socket with a filter to see if that may increase your speed?  You current speed is within your expected range from dslchecker results although at the bottom end

The master socket has an ADSL V1.0 faceplate so do not normally use filters anywhere.

The test socket is behind the faceplate so you would need to use a filter to connect to it. This would rule out a problem with the faceplate or internal wiring.

Removing the faceplate and connecting to the test socket with a filter did not make any difference to the download speed. 

Replacing the SH2 with a HH5 increases the download speed by 2 - 3 Mbps for some reason. 

As the BT Broadband Availability Checker suggests a maximum possible speed of 37 - 39 Mbps I assume that the equipment in the local cabinet is restricting the speed.

The availability checker does suggest a maximum speed of 37-39 but it is just an estimate that is why it gives a low figure as well.

The restriction is loss due to cable length and gauge. Your connection is within speed range given by the checker.

Did you maximum data rate change while connected to the test socket?

I only checked the download speed when connected to the test socket.

The BT cabinet is about 0.6km away so to get the advertised Fibre 1 average speed of 50 Mbps I would presumably have to be very close to the cabinet.

The BT advertising is misleading as it clearly suggests that Fibre 1 (advertised average 50 Mbps) is faster than Fibre Essential (advertised average 36 Mbps).
