FTTP with Phone but with 3rd party router

Hi 

This might have been asked before, but, I am thinking of moving from Virgin Broadband (350 mbs) to BT Full Fibre.  I have a 3rd party WiFi 6 router - Asus AX8 connected to my Virgin Hub (in Modem Mode).

I also have a BT landline (Copper).  I have an elderly mother with a Care-Line system.  The master base unit of DECT phones plug into the Care-line system and then the Care-Line system plugs into the BT socket.

So, if I had BT FTTP Full Fibre, I am pretty sure that I could remove the home hub and plug my Asus AX8 router into the ONT box and get the broadband working fine, but the Digital Voice line seems to rely on the Home hub - BUT - Is this just because it has an in-built ASA.

Would it be possible to use a stand-alone ASA to connect the Care-Line system to an ethernet port on my Asus AX8 router, thus achieving a Digital Voice phone connection via FTTP without the need of connecting the Home hub ?

Alternatively, I am thinking that I may have to open a new BT account and have a Fibre & DV account as well as retaining my Copper Land line account.

There are numerous posts on this subject and to use DV you need to use the SH2 connected to the ONT.  If you move to BT FTTP then you will get DV as PSTN  IS being terminated by 2025

Thats not exactly what Im asking.  What I basically want to know is if the Home Hub (phone acces bit) is simply an ASA that can be replaced by a standard ASA.  In the article you point to it says:-

"If an analogue phone line customer currently has no broadband service (ADSL or VDSL), still doesn't want it and still wants a voice service, they will be switched to ADSL or VDSL (SOTAP or SOGEA) at BT's preference and some sort of ATA will provide an in-premise phone socket (see earlier).  If the above terms seems complicated, don't worry - they matter more to technies, ISPs and other service providers.  Those providers will ensure that your have continued voice service, one way or another."

So Im pretty certain the broadband will work with a 3rd party router, but will the phone work with a 3rd party ASA - or even an ASA that I could buy from BT

AFAIK, No, BT DV although essentially VOIP, is tied to the hub , so the hub needs connected, it’s not possible to configure an ATA and use BT DV,

Some customers have ported their phone number number to a regular VOIP provider , so they can then use their own router and still have telephony with the ported number, but you would need to check if the Care alarm will work with any (ATA) VOIP provider, but once the number is BT DV the SH2 is needed to use it.

BT's digital voice will only work with the BT hub no matter how many ASA's you get. You cannot (presently) use a third party router for digital voice.

Alternatively if you wish to use a third party router you don't have to have dugital voice you can use a different VoIP service.

Interesting.  How about  if the WiFi, dhcp etc. Was turned off, on the hub.  So that the hub was basically a switch with an inbuilt ASA.

Connect the analogue phone to the hub  then connect the hub to the Asus router.

The phone would then be connected to the hub and the hub would be connected to the Internet.

Yes, you can do that, as long as you re happy double natting.
