Download the free version of Malwarebytes, it will detect and remove PUPs.

You would be surprised how many it will find.
Tried it this morning but doesn't work. Suspect that it will only work if you sign up for another AV program which costs £2.50 per month.
Anyone have any better suggestions?

If you do a scan, it will give a list of all the PUPs. You then have to select the ones you want removing and then tell it to remove them. Its always worked in the past, as others will confirm. The paid option adds real-time detection.
Agree with @Keith_Beddoe , the free version of Malwarebytes will reveal any PUPs.
You could also use the free ADW cleaner from Malwarebytes
AdwCleaner - Free Adware Cleaner & Removal Tool | Malwarebytes
I have used the Malware Adware Cleaner and although it appears to remove/ quarantine the pop-ups from the computer it does not prevent more being installed. The main interest seems to be getting me to pay for the premium version when I already have the BT internet .
You are quite correct. It is up to you to check what you are downloading to ensure that you are not downloading any PUPs etc. If you don't want to check you will need to pay for a product that will do that for you such as the Malware paid for product.
