Ghost emails / emails not synchronising

Hi All and I hope you can help me.

Two days ago 5 random emails from the first of July appeared in my inbox and these emails cannot be deleted and I keep getting a message saying these were moved on another device and I need to synchronise / refresh. However when I try to do so I just get the circular symbol as if it is trying to do so, but this never finishes and just stays on the screen until it eventually times out.

With these 5 messages stuck on my email it stops any new emails arriving.

Please can someone advise how I can get rid of these 5 old messages that are just random adverts that I would have deleted months ago at the time when they originally arrived.

using BT email app and also the web portal, and neither will refresh to get rid of these emails
