Moving to a new flat, address is missing

I'm soon to move to a new flat as the first tenant. It's a converted older property. BT fibre checker doesn't list my address, although it is listed on Royal Mail. Other flats in the same building show as connected to Fibre services, but I'm struggling to get any information as to whether I will be able to do the same. Is there some way to get my address added to BT's records, so I can find out what services are available?

You would need to follow the process for ordering a new phone line first. Once that has been provided, then the Openreach database will be updated and you will be able to see what broadband options are available to you.

Place an order for a line only using this link - https://www.bt.com/landline/deals

If the address doesn't appear properly when you enter the postcode, there is a section underneath where you can manually enter the address.  This will raise the order with the address showing as bronze and it will prompt Openreach to carry out a survey to confirm the routing.   Once the routing is updated the order will then progress as normal.  You can then add broadband once you have the line up and running.

I'm a little confused - I don't strictly want a phone service at all, I really just want a quality internet connection FTTP/FTTC. It seems weird to need to pay for a landline just to find out what the other options are! There must be a better way surely?

No, the cost of the landline is included in the broadband package, so you do not pay any more. In order to establish a routing, Openreach need an order from a Service Provider. You do not have to use the phone line at all, its just needed to create a routing.

As you have posted on a BT Retail forum, I assume you intend to order broadband from BT.

If you are intending to use a different provider, then you will need to post on their user forum

Well yes I assumed BT would be able to offer the best solution, but I can't understand why I need to commit to a contract before I find out if they can provide the service I want or not. If the response is "no, we can only offer 2mb adsl" then I'm probably not going to want it!

The broadband speed that would be offered, would be the same for all providers that use the Openreach network.

Unfortunately, the only way to get the Openreach database updated, is to place an order. Once the line is active, you will then be able to see what speed is available.

If you do not like what is offered, then you would have 14 days to cancel the contract once the service is activated.

Ah okay, well that takes some of the sting out of it at least. Kind of annoyed that the landlord wouldn't have activated the line already, seems a little uncool to leave it to someone to find out about just as they move in!

Why would the landlord pay for the connection, its up to the tenant, unless the landlord is providing it for students, as part of the rent?

You cannot activate a line without paying the line rental.

Post a screenshot of what the BT DSL Address Checker shows for one of the other flats in the same building so we can see if it's FTTP or FTTC you're talking about when you say 'fibre services'. Chances are your flat will have almost identical estimates once on the system if FTTC. https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome
