Reduced Broadband throughput following uncommanded Smart Hub 2 shutdown

This is a new one for me.

Without prior notice, at about 15:45 on Sunday, whilst on-line , my BT Smart Hub spontaneously shut down and re-started.

After this happened, some on-line activity seemed a bit sluggish.

So, I checked the throughput speeds today (Monday) and found that they'd reduced. Download  speed reduced to 20Mbs from a usual 45Mbps and upload reduced to about 8Mbps from a usual 9-10Mbps.

I'm current paying for a 50Mbps download  service.

As far as I can see from BT Wholesale availability checker the lines in my area are still capable of delivering 50Mbps - the worst case for a VDSL Range  B impacted line is 57.1 Mbps down, 19 Mbps up, and the line hand-back threshold is 49.7 Mbps.

Tried the usual, and just restarted the hub - no change.

However, on factory resetting the hub and then re-entering my prior values the speeds came back to normal i.e. 45 down and 9 up.

Assuming the hub hasn't been hacked who in BT would have the authority to do this and Why would they do it ?

I note that my BT bill arrived today and that BT  have been petitioning me for the last couple of months to "Upgrade" my broadband service . . . and of course pay more - something I'm not keen to do as I don't need anything that is offered in the "Upgrade".

Roll on 5G.

Re: Reduced Broadband throughput following uncommanded Smart Hub 2 shutdown

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the stats from your router (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser) and if  HH5 then go to troubleshooting then helpdesk and if HH6/SH2 then advanced settings then technical log information .

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

The only thing that customer service can do is restart your hub but DLM could reduce speed and increase noise margin to try and ensure a stable conenction.  Of course line noise could quite easily cause a connection reset

enter your phone number and post results  remember to delete number   https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

FTTP is not available.

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (VDSL or G.fast) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

Actual speeds experienced by end users and quoted by CPs will be lower due to a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communica on Providers' networks and within customer premises.

The Stop Sale date for IPstream is from 30 Nov 2012. the Formal Re rement date for IPstream is from 30 Jun 2014.

If you decide to place an order for a WBC fibre product, an appointment may be required for an engineer to visit the end user's premises to supply the service

In order to be eligible for handback, downstream speed should be less than Downstream Handback Threshold values.

Re: Reduced Broadband throughput following uncommanded Smart Hub 2 shutdown

No reply  . . . came the stern remark.

Bl**dy hub's done it again. Late PM today, tested speed. Ookla says its down to 24Mbps. Factory reset. Back-up to 45Mbps.

I don't think its the idiot DLM system doing this.

Oh well, If it happens again, next missive lands on Mr Jansen's desktop.

Re: Reduced Broadband throughput following uncommanded Smart Hub 2 shutdown

Coincidence ? - this occurring just at the start of the new campaign to push FTTP installations with extra "Services":-

https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2020/08/openreach-launch-new-uk-fttp-premium-connection-servic...

Is my FTTC VDSL 2 data download rate being squeezed below line hand-back rates  at the exchange to smooth the introduction of FTTP ?

You can also use the online, raise a fault page https://www.bt.com/faults , it will do some tests and raise the fault automatically if needed.
