Slow speeds on ASUS router and openreach modem

Hi guys, I was having ping spike and fluctuating speed issues with the Smart Hub 2 and BT done all there usual checks but no joy.

I’m on the gfast 300 package and recently purchased a gfast openreach modem and asus router, all set up correctly but I was only receiving 80mbps instead of 280-300 but upload was perfect….the router itself was only a £40 ASUS router but I’m just lost with what to next? I have to use the PPPOE to use the router and was wondering if this is the problem? Any suggestions would be great 🙏

Re: Slow speeds on ASUS router and openreach modem

Which ASUS router is it?  Does it have Gigabit ports?  Lower end routers will not have a fast enough cpu to cope with >100Mbit PPPoE connections - it requires a fair bit of cpu power to decode the packets.

Re: Slow speeds on ASUS router and openreach modem

I have returned it since but it was a ASUS RT -AC51U, that would make sense as the cpu memory was maxed out when I was doing tests etc. Is there any router you would recommend that would support those speeds and would be simple to set up with the openreach modem?
thanks for your help 🙂

Re: Slow speeds on ASUS router and openreach modem

The ASUS RT AX88U seems a popular choice.

Re: Slow speeds on ASUS router and openreach modem

The Asus router you mention  - ASUS RT -AC51U - only has 10/100 Ethernet ports

It wont do what you seem to be expecting....
