Smart Hub 2.0 PPPoE

Hello all! My FTTP got connected earlier today. Everything is looking good, but there is one thing that I am trying to see whether I can achieve:

As a router I am using a pfSense box while the Smart Hub 2.0 I made just an AP. However, I have to suffer the clicking noise of the hub since its WAN interface is not connected to the ONT modem, so I thought that I may trick it by using my pfSense box as a PPPoE server, but unfortunately this fails.

I did some packet captures with tcpdump on the pfSense box and I was able to see the PPPoE packets exchanged between pfSense and BT as well as between pfSense and Hub. Unfortunately, this got me nowhere. Any ideas?

Can you not set up a PPPoE connection with the pfsense box and take the SH out of the eqation?

pfSense works fine. As I said I have configured the Smart Hub to be only a WiFi access point. But because the latter's WAN interface is disconnected it keeps retrying to connect  and I have to suffer its clicking noise every now and again. I have the Smart Hub next to me in my desk area and listening to this clicking gets on my nerves 😠

Therefore, I was thinking if I can trick the Smart Hub by having the pfSense box as a PPPoE server, but so far I have failed to make this work.

The Hub will only accept BT/Plusnet PPPoE credentials.

The username needs to be in the same format that you entered in to pfsense to authenticate.

I'm not familiar with pfsenses PPPoE server so i don't know if this is possible?

Every thread I've seen trying what your trying always has the same audible clicking noise so you'll be doing better than anyone else if you manage to trick the Hub in to thinking it's connected.

This is an example of where using ISP supplied equipment for anything other than a "One size fits all" solution is doomed to fail.

I have made sure that the username is in the same format that I 've entered in to pfSense to authenticate with BT, but this didn't help. I guess what I thought won't work.

I like the Smart Hub since it has better WiFi signal when compared to my Netgear WNDR3700v4  which I had flashed with OpenWRT plus in case something goes wrong with the FTTP connection it will be very easy to just move an ethernet cable in order to hook up the Smart Hub to the ONT and allow BT to debug/diagnose.
