My elderly mother was forced to do the digital switch over a few weeks ago. New smarthub2 router.
This weekend she returned home to what "sounded like a police siren going off " in her lounge. As loud as a fire alarm. It was the Smarthub2 router and the sound only stopped when she turned the power off at the wall. No router sounds since and broadband working ok.
Has anyone else experienced this?
She now has no confidence in the router so turns it off when ever she leaves the flat or when she goes to bed.
Solved! Go to Solution.
The sound would have been coming from one of the phones that had been left off the hook, or not been disconnected after the last call.
Its a sound coming from the network to indicate that the line has not been cleared down.
If it happens again, ask her to check which phone its coming from, and replace the handset.
Thank you so much for your reply.
I had wondered if it was the phone not the router as phones are more likely to be able to emit that kind of sound. They are right next to each other so I could imagine her wrongly mixing up the source.
But she assures me the sounds was unbearable and would have woken up people in adjacent flats and not just a normal notification when a receiver is not put down correctly.
We have replaced the brand new BT phone back with the previous BT one and will see what happens.
Out of interest I went into Smarthub2 technical log and there are lots of entries labelled 00:00 01 Oct when she had the siren sound sometime between the real time of 07:29 05 Dec and 07:47 05 Dec (when she restarted the hub ok). I've looked at the complete technical log for the hub and 00:00 01 Oct has never appeared at any other time on hub restart. Could this be relevant at all?

This will be the sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cdos63bN3g
Thank you again. That sound matches what was heard.
Not sure why it was so incredibly loud, but hopefully it will not happen again.
