Voicemail spool icon missing when messages waiting

Phone is Sony Xperia Z5c and previously on ASDA mobile/EE the spool icon worked as expected. 

After move to BT Mobile/EE it no longer works.  I just get an SMS asking me to call 1571.  Can anyone suggest a fix please ?
