Outlook/IMAP seems to be sorted now and I see BT are aware of the problem re web mail, as in this message when I went to check out service status,

 

Some BT Mail customers may experience a slight delay accessing their account when using webmail, but we're working hard to fix this as quickly as possible. Customers who access their account via the BT Mail App or by a client are not affected.
